What does my vision insurance include?
Vision insurance and discount plans typically cover routine eye care, which includes your yearly eye exam for a glasses prescription and, in some cases, a contact lens evaluation. Most plans also offer benefits toward the purchase of eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Your routine exam also includes a general eye health screening to detect any early signs of medical eye conditions. We always strive to complete your routine exam first and schedule any necessary medical follow-up visits separately. However, if a current medical issue or concern arises during your visit, your exam may need to be billed as a medical eye visit instead.
Why/when is my medical insurance billed?
Medical eye exams can be either comprehensive or focused, depending on your condition. Some are preventative, like annual diabetic eye exams, while others involve monitoring known diagnoses such as cataracts, dry eye, macular degeneration, or glaucoma, or evaluating new eye symptoms that are not related to glasses.
If we are in-network with your medical insurance, we can bill your visit accordingly. You will be responsible for any applicable copays, deductibles, or coinsurance.
Please note that not all medical insurance plans cover a refraction (the part of the exam where we check your glasses prescription). For example, Medicare does not cover refractions.
What should I bring to my eye exam?
Please bring both your vision insurance and medical insurance information to your eye exam. If you currently wear any prescription lenses, be sure to bring your eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. We also recommend bringing any questions you may have about your eye health.
If you’re unsure about any additional items to bring, feel free to contact your optometrist ahead of your appointment.
How do I know if my child needs glasses?
Taking your child to an optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam is the best way to determine if they need glasses. Many children with vision problems may not realize they need them. Common signs of vision issues in children include:
- Sitting too close to the television
- Squinting
- Sensitivity to light
- Difficulty with eye-hand coordination
- Avoiding visual activities like reading or drawing
If you notice any of these signs, schedule an eye exam for your child today!
Is a contact lens exam different than an eye exam?
Yes, a contact lens exam is different from a regular eye exam. While a comprehensive eye exam evaluates the overall health of your eyes and checks for any underlying conditions, a contact lens fitting involves taking detailed measurements to ensure the proper fit and prescription for your lenses.
Please note that there is an additional fee for the contact lens fitting and evaluation, applicable to both new and established patients.
Schedule your eye exam today to discuss all your contact lens options and have any questions answered!
Can eye exams detect other health issues?
Yes! Eye exams can reveal more than just vision problems. In addition to detecting eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, comprehensive eye exams can also uncover signs of systemic health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even heart disease.
This is why regular eye exams are an important part of your overall health care—regardless of age or whether you wear glasses or contacts.
Schedule your annual eye exam today to stay proactive about your eye and overall health.
